1984 Avanti, excellent original underside, no fresh black paint or undercoating covering up rust or repairs, or replacement hog needed, perfect originals. Original 305 H.O. V-8 with original 700 R4 Auto Trans, moonroof (doesn't leak) the black paint is about 25+ years old but is still extremely nice. I purchased this Avanti about 24-25 years ago, and kept it for myself. I sold this Avanti about 10-12 years ago and bought it back a couple years later, as he was moving and did not have room for 2 Avantis. I drove this Avanti on the Hot rod Power Tours. I sold it again about 3 years ago and he had a long personalization list, that would create an Avanti like the Altman's did from 1965-1982. It has a very, very long list of parts that were replaced with N.O.S. Avanti parts, only because they were 34 years old and trying to build almost a new Avanti again. The burgundy leather interior, with Recaro seat was in outstanding condition but he wanted the whole thing changed, in color and style. A set of standard 1983 Avanti seats were chosen for their looks and comfort with new soft foam. The total interior was redone with the finest tan glove soft leather available and is probably the finest interior ever installed in an Avanti. Avanti Motors always had fantastic interiors, but this one has a lot more detail and is a step above with materials and superb craftmanship.
The interior was done the way a 1982 Avanti would have been built by the Altmans. New cardboard door and quarter panels were covered with this, glove soft, tan leather in the rolled & pleated style, which does not show off the factory waves in those 1984-1985 door panels, like they do with the horizonal pleats. No carpet was allowed on the bottom of the door panels or cowl kick panel, just tan leather. A N.O.S Nostalgic Motor Cars dash pad was dyed tan to match the tan leather A N.O.S speaker grill was installed in the dash pad. N.O.S. 1984 walnut wood dash and console pieces replaced the original wood that had cracks in the finish, which is the normal for the 36 year old Avanti wood. All new Avanti replacement Stewart Warner chrome bezel gauges for that elegant and classic look, were installed with red back lighting. A Nardi wood steering wheel that matches the wood dash/console perfectly replaced the standard 1984 steering wheel. I installed a custom auto sound stereo with blue tooth and etc. A N.O.S. ash tray assembly replaced the original one that had a weak return spring. New plastic heater control illumination panel was also installed with red back lighting. A new overhead light switch panel replaced the original that had a dead (non replaceable) light bulb. All new A/C switches, knobs and console vents were replaced. N.O.S 1983 sun visors were leather covered , new cardboard headliners and N.O.S. door pull straps were leather covered with special stitching which Avanti Motors didn't do on their fabulous interiors. All N.O.S. inside chrome heater control knobs, door handles, rear ash tray replaced the originals only because they were still available. New speakers with dyed grills to match the leather were fitted to a new parcel shelf with an access door like 1963-83 had. That of course got the new foam padding underneath the new tan leather, which by the way fits perfectly with no sagging in the shelf. the finishing touch is black wool custom fit carpet with wool floor mats for the front. The very expensive black wool carpet and very expensive tan, glove soft leather theme was carried into the trunk with a custom stitched tan leather tool pouch, and black wool carpet, in the Avanti Motor design. The front windshield was replaced and a new windshield weather seal was installed the rear window and 1/4 windows were removed to install the new interior and of course N.O.S. weather seals were installed. 99% of the weather seals were replaced with N.O.S. items. All weather seals were properly installed and sealed for a no leak Avanti. Of all the 1963-1964 Studebaker Avantis and all the 1965-1985 Avanti I have serviced, sold or just plain driven, this by far is the BEST handling Avanti I've ever driven.
Every part of the braking system was replaced with new or rebuild components. Except the steel brake lines, which were and are rust free, and proportioning valve, new front wheel bearings and races, along with 4 new shocks were also replaced. The only reason all the brake parts were placed was minimized the chances of part failure. As I stated earlier, that I drove this Avanti when I owned it in the Hot Rod Power Tour, without any problems. the engine compartment also received a lot of new parts. All new hoses, belts, N.O.S. P.S. pump, 4 new P.S. hoses, N.O.S. spark plug wires, new vacuum hose, fuel filter, recored 3 core radiator, 1983 Avanti fan shroud with a flex flan blade, new Anti freeze, thermostat, battery, rocker cover gasket, spark plug wires, dist cap. rotor, dist. modual, steering rag joint, rebuilt a/c compress and clutch, some new A/C hoses, 134A refrigerant and etc.
The majority of the parts I replaced on this 1984 Avanti were not needed and were done at the new owners instance. Some parts I just refused to replace even though he insisted on their replacement. Example: steel brake lines, they just don't wear out, but they may rust out, but not on an Avanti that is as pristine, underneath, as this one was when I started. I changed the rear wheel cylinders. The steel brake line tubing, broke loose with out the steel line twisting, it's that pristine !
In defense of a customer that put way too much money in this car, when I told him some of these parts don't need to be replaced, but on his instance, I replaced them as he was paying the bill. What he was tryin to achieve was to get as closest to a new Avanti as he could, for his retirement home in Arizona. He owned 4 or 5 new Avantis before this one. I used to service his Avantis. I ordered and sold him a brand new 1983 black on black Avanti which was his daily driver, just like his previous Avanti were. He has been an Avanti customer, and friend for about 40 plus years and were still friend. What did he didn't think, I am now about 2000 miles away, and knowledgeable service is not just around the corner. The Avanti he loves so much and some what understands, that it's basically a 60 year old engineered automobile and will be the one and only daily driver in Arizona. The wife might understand and appreciate his love of the world's most beautiful automobile ever produced, but she still has to drive it on a daily basis and would much rather have a new SUV to haul the grandkids in. Which she did get, so I purchased it and had it shipped back to Wixom Michigan. His loss could be your gain. I don't negotiate on the price, I place on any of my cars and never have. I don't mind keeping it as it is STUNNING to look at and drive !
