Heart-Stopping Failure: Is Your Avanti Accelerator Linkage Safe?

Imagine pulling into a busy intersection and suddenly having zero accelerator response. For one Avanti owner, this nightmare became a reality when a 50-year-old ball stud simply popped out of its socket. In this critical safety guide, Dan Booth explains why the original 1963–1980 accelerator linkage rods are a "ticking time bomb" for drivers.

Discover the mechanical weak points of the Part #1539610/612 rod assembly and learn how to inspect your throttle bellcrank for excessive play—anything over .005 inches can lead to sticking idles and unpredictable response. From the evolution of the Avanti throttle system to the clever 1977 pedal-lift bracket that prevents floor rust, this article provides the technical breakdown and part numbers you need to ensure your Avanti never leaves you stranded.

Studebaker, Avanti Throttle Control Bellcrank RARE NOS

This is a new throttle control bell crank. This is a very RARE NOS part. This bell crank part number 1547836 was installed on 1963-1964 Studebaker Avantis. I think it was also installed on Studebaker Cars and Trucks, Check the part number 1547836 to your Studebaker parts book to see if it is the same part number. It will not fit 1965-1985 Avantis you will have to transfer your 2 mounting brackets from your old one, as they were never installed on this one.

The reasons you might want to change your throttle bell crank.

1) Do you have to hit the accelerator pedal hard and fast to get the engine RPMs to come down to a normal idle without sticking?

2) Does your accelerator pedal have to strong of a spring to get it to return to a normal idle without sticking. The heavy spring creates too much pressure on your foot to operate comfortably

3) Is there play from when you push down on the accelerator pedal before the engine RPMs start to increase?

These are just some of the problems a warn throttle bell crank can cause. After all it’s a round steel rod going through and turning inside 2 flat pieces of steel that have holes drilled in them (no bushings). It also has 46 years of use and probably no lubrication since 1963 or 1964.

Avanti Throttle Control Bellcrank 1965-1974

This is a new throttle control Bellcrank. This is a very RARE NOS part. This bellcranks was installed on 1965-1974 Avantis. It was not installed on 1963-1964 Studebaker Avantis or 1975-1985 Avantis it is a complete assy. with bracket attached for the trans. kick down switch. It’s very easy to change. It simply bolts to the back of the engine with 2 bolts.

The reasons you might want to change your throttle bellcrank:

1) Do you have to hit the accelerator pedal hard and fast to get the engine RPMs to come down to a normal idle without sticking?

2) Does your accelerator pedal have too strong of a spring to get it to return to a normal idle with out sticking ? The heavier spring creates too much pressure on your foot to operate comfortably.

3) Is there play from when you push down on the accelerator pedal before the engine RPM’s start to increase.

These are just some of the problems a warn throttle bell crank can cause. After all it’s a round steel rod going through and turning inside 2 flat pieces of steel that have holes drilled in them ( no bushings ). IT also has 35-44 years of use and probably hasn’t been lubed for that 35-44 years !

Just for conversation, this is one of the 1st parts that Avanti had engineering drawn up and make, to allow the Chevy engine to be installed in the Avanti.
