Identifying and Fixing the "Mystery" Gas Smell in Your 1963–1985 Avanti

Do you notice a strong gasoline odor inside your Avanti, especially after a full fill-up? This isn't just an annoyance—it’s a critical safety issue. In this comprehensive guide, Dan Booth explores the history of the Avanti fuel system and the specific structural failures that plague 1977–1985 models.

Learn why common "pour-in" tank sealers eventually fail and discover the permanent solution: a professional PVC-plastic reconditioning process that carries a lifetime warranty. This article provides a technical walkthrough for replacing the filler neck hose, calibrating the improved Styrofoam-float NOS Sender (#1701026), and identifying the "apple cider" residue that signals a leaking tank. From original Studebaker safety engineering to Dan's "Figure-Eight" leak test, this is the definitive resource for keeping your fuel system safe, clean, and factory-accurate.
